Elephant Village Educational Program

Breaking Barriers in Elephant Village Where education opens doors for marginalized Muslim families

Elephant Village, located on the outskirts of Jaipur, is home to approximately 500 residents from 60 Muslim families. The community derives its name from its primary occupation—the residents work as elephant caretakers (mahouts), managing and caring for elephants used in tourism and ceremonial activities.

Living conditions in Elephant Village are extremely basic, with no access to electricity, healthcare facilities, or proper sanitation. The isolation from urban infrastructure, combined with the demands of their traditional occupation, has kept education out of reach for most families.

The Challenge

The unique circumstances of Elephant Village present distinct challenges:

  • Complete absence of educational infrastructure

  • Cultural barriers to girls' education in a conservative community

  • Adults' demanding work schedules leave children unsupervised

  • High illiteracy rates across all age groups

  • Limited awareness about the importance of formal education

  • First-generation learners with no family educational support

The most significant barrier has been access to education for girls. In this traditional community, Elephant Village had never seen a girl complete 10th grade—until SAARTHAK arrived.

Our Intervention

Understanding that sustainable change requires community trust, SAARTHAK began by engaging with village elders and parents, explaining how education could preserve their culture while opening new opportunities. We established an educational center that respects community values while promoting progressive learning.

Foundational Education Non-formal education programs in mathematics, English, and Hindi designed specifically for first-generation learners. Our patient, culturally sensitive approach helps children build confidence alongside knowledge.

Computer Literacy for Teenage Girls A revolutionary program in Elephant Village, our computer classes for teenage girls have broken traditional barriers. These classes provide:

  • Basic computer skills and digital literacy

  • Typing and internet navigation

  • Practical applications for future employment

  • Confidence to pursue further education

Boys' Education We ensure boys receive quality education while emphasizing respect for women's education and gender equality.

Women's Empowerment Young women and mothers participate in literacy programs, learning to read and write for the first time in their lives.
